For anyone in Ireland (and beyond) committed to taking a break from alcohol, beginning alcohol sobriety, or transforming their relationship with drinking, education is one of the most powerful tools available. Books, self-help literature and the soberlit genre, whether read traditionally or listened to through Audible during a workout or a walk, offer guidance, self-awareness, and emotional support as you move toward alcohol freedom. They won’t provide a quick fix to what you want to achieve for obvious reasons, but self-help sober literature can be used as part of an integrative and holistic lifestyle approach to changing your relationship with booze.

Understanding the psychology, biology and behaviour behind alcohol use, and how it progresses to alcoholism helps you make progressive, sustainable change. The more you learn about how alcohol impacts your health, wellbeing, nutrition, lifestyle, nervous system and environment, the easier it becomes to move toward alcohol recovery and alcohol freedom and a calmer, more balanced life.
To make your deep dive into the ever-growing sober movement less bamboozling, I have curated this list of quick list of alcohol freedom, recovery and sober literature written in the past five years.
As you may notice, many are written by women and for women, reflecting the significant shift women are taking to remove and eradicate alcohol from their lives. The large majority of those who do give up alcohol will do so out of choice rather than due to an alcohol addiction or dependency.
If you are a man reading this list, I want to know that, obviously, many of these books will be relevant to your journey too! It just so happens that it is largely women who write, buy and read self-help books! I have included eight books by male authors, including three Irish biographies just for you.
You don’t need to spend a fortune on books
Rather than spending a fortune on new books, I suggest that my clients to use their local library. You can also purchase books in your local bookstore. Many will be second-hand in your local charity shop or second-hand book store. Listening to them on Audible is a great way to get through books quickly and is often more appealing for those with dyslexia. You can find many of these books and similar free books on the Kindle for hassle-free book downloading. Finally, every single one of these authors can be found as a guest on podcasts around the world just by searching their name on your favourite podcast platform.
Tip: Set yourself a goal to finish one book every 21–30 days to build momentum in your own alcohol free journey.
In no particular order, each book below, with its short blurb, will provide different perspectives, insights and approaches grounded in lived experience, neuroscience, psychology and personal transformation. Switch up your authors and ensure that you consume a diverse set of perspectives, particularly from health professionals who provide science and evidence-based research and information.
