The Wholesome Path Blog: Ireland’s Alcohol-Free Living Community for Women

Welcome to The Wholesome Path Blog by Orlagh Reid, Psychotherapist, Addiction Counsellor, Coach and Group Facilitator.

If alcohol no longer fits the life you want, you’re allowed to step away – gently, deliberately and with a positive intention. You don’t need to hit rock bottom to change your relationship with booze. The Wholesome Path Blog promotes a low-to-no alcohol, healthy, and wholesome lifestyle through positive health.

Welcome.

If you’ve found your way here, something has already begun to shift, and you are already contemplating going low or no alcohol.

You may have stopped drinking.
You may be cutting back.

You may be drinking less and less often.
You may be in your first year of alcohol sobriety or alcohol treatment.

You may be ready to go alcohol free but don’t know where or how to start.
Or you may simply be questioning a relationship with alcohol that no longer feels healthy or conducive to your life.

The Wholesome Path Blog is an alcohol-freedom and positive health blog created for women who are choosing a different path forward – one rooted in improving positive health, education and self-awareness.

This blog is for women who are going low-alcohol or alcohol-free, those navigating the first 365 days of giving up alcohol, and those consciously reducing alcohol while building a healthier relationship with themselves. Alongside alcohol education and information, this space also focuses on diet, nutrition, physical health, mental health, and overall wellbeing, because recovery doesn’t happen in isolation — it happens in the body, the mind, and everyday life. It is neuro-inclusive, and as a proud neurodivergent woman, I share my own insights on the different needs of neurospicey women.

What does “wholesome” mean here?

Orlagh Reid – The Wellbeing Psychotherapist

The word wholesome is a word I love, which means different things to each of us. I decided to call this blog the wholesome path blog because creating a wholesome life for myself is an everyday pursuit for over twenty years, from creating a work-life balance to nature walks, hikes and sea swims.

In its truest sense, wholesome means promoting health, healing, and wellbeing — physically, mentally, and emotionally. It’s about nourishment rather than depletion. Care and compassion rather than control. And, feeling nurtured by nature and those who know and love us best.

The wholesome path is not about perfection.
It’s not about restriction, punishment, or rigid rules.
And it’s not about “fixing” yourself.

It’s about learning how to care for yourself as a whole person.

And importantly, it takes time.

This is a journey, not a quick fix

Changing your relationship with alcohol is not an event. It’s a process.

Whether you choose full abstinence and zero alcohol or a low-alcohol lifestyle which is well-regulated and intentional, the path unfolds gradually. Healing happens in layers and with time.

The wholesome path allows space for this.
It recognises that change, healing and recovery — physical, emotional, and psychological — is a journey, not a destination.

Who I am — and why this blog exists

My name is Orlagh Reid. I’m an IACP Accredited Psychotherapist, Addiction Counsellor, and Life Coach, and I’ve been supporting women and men with alcohol use, treatment, and recovery for over 15 years. I am also a mother and middle-aged woman who understands that the needs of women giving up alcohol are different to men’s.

One thing I know with certainty is this:

Giving up alcohol is about far more than willpower.

Going alcohol free and alcohol recovery — whether that means sobriety, treatment, or intentional reduction — is a prolonged process that requires education, support, patience, and care, particularly in the first year. Too often, women feel pressure to “just stop” and move on, without space to understand the emotional, physical, and psychological shifts that come with change.

This blog exists to meet that gap.

A special focus on mothers and carers

A part of my work, and my passion, is dedicated to supporting mothers and those in caring roles who are choosing to go alcohol-free or re-evaluate their relationship with drinking.

Motherhood can be deeply rewarding, but it can also be consuming. Many mothers carry relentless mental load, exhaustion, guilt, and pressure — often with very little space to rest, reflect, or feel like themselves again. Alcohol can quietly become a coping mechanism, a pause button, or the only “time off” in an otherwise full life.

I have a particular passion for helping mothers regain a sense of control over their wellbeing, mindset, and inner world — not so they can simply parent better, but so they can feel better.

This work is about helping women:

  • Reconnect with themselves beyond the role of “mother”
  • Carve out precious time that is truly their own
  • Rebuild self-connection and stress management
  • Rediscover joy, curiosity, and identity

When mothers are supported, regulated, and nourished, everything else benefits — including their children. But the mother herself matters too.

What you’ll find on The Wholesome Path Blog

Here, I’ll share honest, real and authentic articles on:

  • Education and awareness around alcohol, dependency, and the process of giving up
  • Insights into the emotional and psychological realities of giving up alcohol and sobriety
  • Articles on the crucial role of diet, nutrition, health, hydration, and energy
  • Reflections on mental health, anxiety, mood, and self-regulation
  • Supportive discussions around physical wellbeing, rest, movement, and boundaries
  • Honest conversations about cravings, urges, social pressure and stress management
  • Encouragement for women choosing a low-alcohol lifestyle, not just abstinence

Every single article comes directly from my own thoughts, experiences and expertise. I use AI, Otter and Grammarly to help me refine and structure each blog, reduce typos and to help speed up the process of getting articles posted. But ultimately, this is 100% my own content.

Listen, learn, and go deeper

If you’d like to explore these themes further, you can also listen to Orlagh Reid’s episodes on the Irish No More Booze Podcast with Olivia Farrelly, where we talk openly about alcohol-free living, recovery, stress management, motherhood, and wellbeing in a grounded and relatable way.

A note on support and professional care

This blog is not a replacement for professional help.

If you are concerned about your alcohol consumption, mental health, or physical wellbeing, please speak with your GP, a psychotherapist, or another qualified healthcare professional — particularly if you are reducing or stopping alcohol after long-term or heavy use.

This blog actively promotes alcohol recovery supports, treatment services, and self-help groups, as social and peer support are vital elements of sustainable recovery. No one is meant to do this alone.

In addition to this blog, I provide daily private one-to-one online psychotherapy and addiction counselling, which can be booked at

you’re making space for something more nourishing.

The wholesome path isn’t rushed.
