The Hey Gyno! blog is a new women’s sexual health and wellness blog by Orlagh Reid. Gyno comes from the Greek word gyne which actually means woman or female. The HEY GYNO! blog explores topics important to women today such as female sexual wellness, sex positivity, sexual and reproductive conditions, sexual dysfunction, femtech, and body positivity.
As a woman living with and managing endometriosis myself, I wanted to incorporate into one single relatable blog a range of positive and informative articles to raise awareness of conditions such as endometriosis, pelvic health and chronic pain.
“The Hey Gyno!blog is a shout-out to women to promote sexual wellness, self-advocacy, education, awareness and female empowerment.”
In a media culture obsessed with selling women superficial messages such as how to fix their libido, conform to a perfect body image, look younger, and have mindblowing better sex more often, the important and realistic topics affecting women’s sexual health are largely overlooked. They are not sexy enough for mainstream TV and magazines. Social media is also sadly restricting and placing a shadow-ban on much content which is in fact basic sex education making it more difficult for women to access informative articles. Hey Woman! this blog is for you.

Previous to the Hey Gyno! I spent two years writing a popular blog called the Vaginismus Blog. I had many wonderful guest contributors and health professionals sharing their insights and expertise. There were so many women interested in the Vaginismus Blog that I set up the Vaginismus and Co Community for women who wanted to come together online to discuss the topics important to them. We meet once or twice each month sharing and discussing topics important to everyone. I realised quite quickly that many of the articles in the vaginismus blog were also topics relating to female sexual health and wellbeing.
The Hey Gyno! blog is a new series to follow onwards from the Vaginismus blog and will continue to include articles on vaginismus, sexual anxiety, intimacy and GPPPD.

As you may already know, in Ireland, we are still not great at discussing issues relating to our sexual selves. This includes the broad range of undiscussed hidden health conditions such as vulvar pain and gynaecological conditions women experience that impact their sexual health and happiness.

For many women, dare I say the majority of women, talking about sexual health remains a taboo. Something deeply personal. Shame and sex remain intrinsically linked through generations. It can be even harder for women who are quiet, shy, introverted, private or traditional. Many factors influence how openly we discuss topics of sexology.
These range from sexuality to gender, culture to society, and, religion to life experience. Even our sex education, if you had any, remains basic and vague with little or no emphasis on pleasure, self-awareness or female sexual conditions. Disability, chronic pain, infertility and menopause are all factors affecting women today.
